Comfort in the workplace is a key factor for both employee well-being and business performance. Since we spend a large part of our day at work, maintaining proper environmental conditions is not only a matter of comfort, but also of health, efficiency, and sustainability. Among the many elements that influence comfort, temperature and air quality play a central role.

Numerous studies have shown that temperature directly affects concentration, mood, and productivity. An environment that is too warm can cause drowsiness, fatigue, and lack of motivation, while excessive cold leads to discomfort, muscle stiffness, and distraction. Therefore, thermal regulation is one of the fundamental pillars of comfort in modern offices.

In Spain, recommended temperatures are regulated by Royal Decree 486/1997, which sets the minimum safety and health requirements for workplaces. According to this regulation, the ambient temperature should be kept between 17°C and 27°C for sedentary work (such as office work), and between 14°C and 25°C for light physical work. Additionally, Spain’s Energy Saving and Efficiency Plan, reinforced since 2022, recommends setting thermostats to a maximum of 27°C in summer and a minimum of 19°C in winter in air-conditioned workplaces and public spaces, aiming for a balance between comfort and energy efficiency.

Proper climate control not only enhances work performance but also has a direct impact on health. Good ventilation reduces CO₂ levels and other pollutants, prevents dry eyes and throat irritation, and decreases the spread of viruses and bacteria in enclosed environments. Moreover, modern heating and cooling systems often use more sustainable technologies, such as aerothermal systems or inverter equipment, which help reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.

This approach aligns perfectly with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly with SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Investing in efficient climate systems means not only improving workplace quality but also contributing actively to the fight against climate change and reducing companies’ environmental impact.

Ultimately, thermal comfort in the office should not be seen as a luxury, but as an investment in health, productivity, and sustainability. Maintaining a balanced temperature, ensuring good air quality, and using energy responsibly are essential steps toward a more human and environmentally conscious workplace. A comfortable office not only boosts individual performance but also reflects a company’s commitment to the well-being of its employees and the future of our planet.
