Ducted HVAC systems represent a robust and efficient solution for climate control in large commercial spaces, such as offices, shopping malls, hospitals, and hotels. Unlike split or portable air conditioning systems, centralized climate control offers a more uniform air distribution, more precise temperature control, and a cleaner interior aesthetic, as the main components are housed in a dedicated space, such as a mechanical room. Proper planning and installation of these systems are crucial to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency.
The fundamental operating principle involves the generation of cool or warm air by a central unit, typically an air handling unit (AHU), and its subsequent distribution through a network of ducts. These ducts, typically manufactured from aluminum or galvanized steel, are carefully designed and sized to minimize pressure drop and ensure adequate airflow to each zone. Duct material selection depends on factors such as building type, budget, and acoustic requirements. Another crucial aspect is the proper configuration of the filtration system. Air filters, generally of different classes (G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, etc.), remove particulate contaminants from the air, improving indoor air quality and protecting HVAC equipment. Filter type selection depends on the level of environmental contamination and occupant health requirements. In environments with high pollution, high-efficiency filters, such as HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, are recommended, which can remove up to 99.97% of particles with a size of 0.3 microns.
During installation, it is essential to perform duct leakage tests to detect and correct air leaks, which can significantly affect the system’s energy efficiency. These tests are performed using a device called a “blower door test.” Additionally, it is important to calibrate temperature and humidity sensors to ensure accurate readings and efficient temperature control. Preventive maintenance, including filter cleaning, fan inspection, and duct leakage verification, is essential to ensure system lifespan and optimal performance. Maintenance frequency should be defined based on system usage and manufacturer recommendations.
