Ducted HVAC systems represent a proven and highly efficient solution for climate control in commercial spaces, particularly those with large areas and uniform air distribution requirements. Unlike self-contained air conditioning systems, these centralized systems offer precise temperature and humidity control throughout the installation, minimizing fluctuations and ensuring optimal comfort. Proper planning and execution of the installation are crucial to ensure performance and energy efficiency.

The design of a ducted HVAC system begins with a detailed thermal load study, considering factors such as space area, ceiling height, thermal insulation, building orientation, window quantity, and occupancy. This study determines the required capacity of refrigeration and heating equipment, as well as the size and layout of the ductwork network. Energy simulation software such as Carrier HAP or Trane TRACE 700 are used to optimize the design and predict the system’s energy consumption.

The ductwork network, generally manufactured from aluminum or galvanized steel, consists of main and secondary ducts, as well as air intakes, diffusers, and return grilles. Duct diameter calculation is based on the required airflow and air velocity, minimizing friction losses. Excessive air velocity can generate noise and discomfort, while insufficient velocity can compromise uniform air distribution. A maximum velocity of 1.5 m/s is recommended at air intakes and 1.2 m/s at diffusers.

Diffuser selection is a critical aspect of ensuring uniform air distribution. Various diffuser types exist, including deflection, radial, and downflow diffusers, each with specific characteristics and applications. Deflection diffusers are suitable for spaces with low ceilings, while radial diffusers are more efficient for large, high-ceiling spaces. Proper diffuser placement, considering airflow trajectory and potential for air currents, is essential to avoid cold or hot spots.

The energy efficiency of a ducted HVAC system depends on several factors, including the thermal insulation quality of the ducts, proper joint sealing, the efficiency of refrigeration and heating equipment, and system control optimization. It is important to use ducts with adequate thermal insulation, with a minimum thermal resistance of 3.5 W/m². The installation of a heat recovery system, which captures heat from exhaust air to precool incoming air, can significantly improve the system’s energy efficiency. High-efficiency air handling units (AHUs) with variable speed fans and high-efficiency filters (MERV 13 or higher) contribute to reducing energy consumption and improving indoor air quality.

Spanish regulations, specifically Royal Decree 229/2007 on energy efficiency in buildings, establish minimum energy efficiency requirements for HVAC systems. Furthermore, the energy label for HVAC equipment, according to Directive 2010/30/EU, provides information on its energy performance. Compliance with these regulations is crucial to ensure system legality and sustainability.

Preventive maintenance is essential to prolong system lifespan and ensure optimal performance. Periodic inspections of the ducts, filter cleaning, inspection of refrigeration and heating equipment, and verification of the control system are recommended. Duct cleaning can be performed using vacuuming or robotic cleaning systems. Early detection of refrigerant leaks and repair of damaged joints are crucial to prevent efficiency losses and environmental damage.

Installation of a ducted HVAC system requires qualified and experienced professionals. Incorrect installation can compromise system performance, generate comfort problems, and increase energy consumption. It is recommended to use an installer certified by recognized organizations such as CAAAA (Consortium of Associations of Installationers of Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Plumbing). Engaging an experienced professional ensures a safe, efficient, and code-compliant installation.
